GH has an important physiological role in the regulation of whole-body protein metabolism in adults. Recent placebo-controlled dynamic tracer studies using l3C leucine have shown that GH stimulates protein synthesis directly (Fig. 2.33), in contrast to insulin which contributes to the regulation of protein metabolism by inhibiting proteolysis. The increase in protein synthesis is accompanied by a reduction in leucine oxidation.
